General Electric and Ecomagination?

-
--A dancing elephant does his best "Gene Kelly" dance impersonation in GE's newest TV advertisement, "Singin in the rain," a clever spin on the film of the same name. The ad takes place in a rain forest full of exotic animals and features the classic song, which sends the elephant into a tap dance a la Gene Kelly. (from GE website)

ok..ok .. I know what your thinking GE and the Environment? They fought against the EPA's Plan to clean up Hudson River in 2001. They are a major corporation which makes everything from Jet engines to Television programming. But folks, It appears that there is some real effort over in corporate. It looks like GE is trying to hop on the band wagon to be a sustainable and eco friendly company. Here at Ecolosophy we say keep up the good work!

Music Thursday Bruce Springsteen!

Here at Ecolosophy its music Thursday. Starting this week every Thursday we will try to cover a musician who is trying to change the world for the better thru their music. Today it's the one.....the only......

To see all the tracks and hear a sample of the goodness click HERE!

NPR's Renee Montagne
Interview with Bruce Springsteen on Devil and Dust.

Extended interview (For die hard fans of course)
About the Boss:
Many know of "The Boss" Through his music but many may not know his passion for bringing attention to the cities he tours Food Banks!

Also On the political front Bruce was a major face during the 2005 Presidential Election. So much so that a indie movement formed to "Draft Bruce". A petition requesting that the singer headline the proposed event. Reuters reported that the petition had over 50,000 people sign. Although the petition eventually did not pan out. Springsteen did in fact hold a "VOTE FOR CHANGE TOUR" . (see a piece of the concert) and was on the cover of Rolling Stone!

It's refreshing with so many cany pop stars that there is a muscian who has something to say and acts on it. If anything its a great example on how you can be involved in your Government and be cool too!

CO-FOUNDER OF GREENPEACE - BOB HUNTER DEAD AT 62!!

----------------------------------

Here at Ecolosophy we could not allow the day to pass without paying tribute to Bob Hunter, the co-founder of Greenpeace. For some the organizations methods for guerilla tactics seem to radical. For others it could go further. But whatever your view point, from blocking whale ships to chaining oneselves to trees. This man deserves credit for standing up for his beliefs and bringing awarness for the need to protect our world.

(Associated Press)TORONTO - Canadian Bob Hunter, who co-founded Greenpeace and used his savvy as a journalist to turn the environmental group's fight to an international cause, died Monday after a battle with prostate cancer, the organization said. He was 63.

Hunter, a columnist for the Vancouver Sun in the 1960s and most recently an ecology broadcaster for Canadian media, first came to prominence in 1971 with the launch of Greenpeace and its protests against nuclear testing. He brought public attention to the hunting of whales and seals, as well as the dumping of toxic waste into the oceans.
The thick-bearded Hunter was once named one of Time magazine's top eco-heroes of the 20th century.

"Bob was a creative force in shaping Greenpeace," said Bruce Cox, executive director of Greenpeace Canada. "His passion and his commitment translated into powerful communications, and his unorthodox approach to communications helped define Greenpeace."
Hunter, who coined the phrase "Don't Make a Wave" to describe his opposition to nuclear testing, boarded a small fishing boat, dubbed the "Greenpeace," in 1971 to set off to Alaska to protest U.S. nuclear testing.

"I thought I was going to be a reporter, taking notes," Hunter later said, according to a news release from Greenpeace. "In reality, I wound up on first watch." He remained on board for 45 days.

Hunter helped establish the in-your-face communication style that became a Greenpeace trademark. He became the first president of Greenpeace in 1973, and led it through its transformation into an international group present in 40 countries, with more than 2.5 million members worldwide.

His media savvy and passion for ecology was critical to the organization, the group said, having adopted the term "rainbow warriors" to describe Greenpeace activists.
In his most recent role, the Manitoba-born Hunter was the ecology news specialist for CHUM's Citytv and CP24 TV channels. He was perhaps best known to Toronto viewers for Paper Cuts, a segment in which Hunter wore a bathrobe and commented on the stories in the day's newspapers.

"This was a man with a great loving heart, a brilliant mind and a massive spirit," said Stephen Hurlbut, vice president of news programming for Citytv.
Hunter died surrounded by his wife, Bobbi and his children Will, Emily, Conan and Justine, according to Citytv. Funeral arrangements were yet to be decided.
"Bob was an inspirational storyteller, an audacious fighter and an unpretentious mystic," said John Doherty, Chair of Greenpeace Canada. "He was serious about saving the world while always maintaining a sense of humor."

Greenpeace said Hunter's spirit would live on "through the people he inspired, the whales he saved and the organization he helped create."

Starbucks and Whiskey equals "YOUR FIRED"

SEATTLE - A mutual fund company that invests only in businesses it deems socially responsible has dropped Starbucks Corp., citing the coffee giant's launch of a java liqueur with whiskey maker Jim Beam.

Pax World Funds, a Portsmouth, N.H.-based fund family, steers clear of companies involved in defense or weapons, tobacco, liquor or gambling. It sold 375,000 shares of Starbucks worth an estimated $23.4 million, about 1.6 percent of its Pax World Balanced Fund portfolio, the fund said in a statement released Wednesday. (By ELIZABETH M. GILLESPIE, Associated Press Writer)

Belive it or not Starbucks is actually one of the more responsible companies when it comes to sustainability
, free trade coffee and the environment. So, the next time you drag yourself bleary eyed, up to the counter, you can have a clear conscience when ordering that tall moccha latte.
